Tick season is here in NSW, and it's vital to keep your furbabies safe! While ticks are generally most active from October to March, they pose a year-round threat. We've already seen several cases in our area.
The main concern is paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus), which attach to pets, burrowing into the skin and feeding on blood while injecting toxic saliva. These ticks can be identified by their grey bodies and legs close to their heads, and they grow larger as they feed. Tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, are also a concern, causing symptoms like rash, fever, headaches, and fatigue.
Signs of Tick Paralysis:
Loss of coordination in the hind legs, which may progress to paralysis
Change in bark
Retching, vomiting or loss of appetite
Coughing
Laboured or rapid breathing
While many cases can be treated by general vets, there's been an increase in pets needing care at emergency hospitals, which provide 24-hour monitoring for critical cases. Severe cases may require constant assistance with breathing due to the tick toxin.
Prevention is crucial, as treatment can cost thousands and recovery isn't guaranteed.

More Helpful Tips:
Check your pets daily, especially around their ears, neck, and legs.
Avoid bushy areas, and consider clipping long-haired pets to make tick checks easier.
