Hero of the Month
Meet Tobi.
If you have seen our previous posts, you will know that Tobi is a stray (worth 5K) who presented to us on the 14th of December 2018 after being hit by a car.
Upon arrival she was treated for shock with oxygen and fluid therapy, as well as pain relief.
After a full examination, it was established that she had a major fracture in both of her legs, as well as compromised breathing due to chest injuries.
Due to the fact that Tobi was not microchipped, and (despite our efforts) we could not locate an owner, we took it upon ourselves to treat her pro bono (as Dr Darren says, this was a LOVE job).
Dr Darren performed orthopaedic surgery on Tobi on the 20th December 2018. This involved removing the top of the Femur from the right side and placing a plate on her left femur. The left side was particularly difficult as the fracture was very low on the bone and there wasn't much room to put screws into the bone to hold the plate firm.
Tobi spent the next 6 weeks on strict cage rest to ensure a smooth recovery.
Once Tobi had recovered from her orthopaedic surgery, we desexed her (21st of January 2019). During this procedure it was discovered that Tobi had likely been in the early stages of pregnancy when HBC, resulting in the termination of her pregnancy, and had started to develop pyometra (infection of the uterus). So it’s good that we performed the desexing surgery when we did, otherwise she would have become very sick.
On the 18th of February 2019 a revised orthopaedic surgery was performed as complications had occurred, meaning that Tobi’s left hind leg would need to be re-plated. This surgery was performed once again by Dr Darren and his amazing nursing team.
Tobi is currently within her 6-week post-operative recovery period, meaning that she is on strict cage rest at the clinic.
Once Tobi has fully recovered, we will finally be able to look for her forever home (she will likely be ready to go to her new home sometime in April).
During the past two months we have all gotten to know Tobi. She is an extremely affectionate cat, with the cutest (loudest) purr you ever did hear. She loves to play (when she’s allowed to), and snuggle, and generally just loves attention.
She would need to be a strictly indoor cat, and would likely thrive as an only pet, although she does seem to tolerate other cats/kittens.
If you think you might be the right person to take on Tobi, and would like to arrange to meet her, please contact us by phone, email, or Facebook message.
